This newsletter is loaded with new information on upcoming outi=

including a very important recruitment outing/overnight we'd li=

Scouts to attend 10/17-18. We are also exploring interest=

attending a BSA 2010 summer camp on Santa Catalina Island and n=

Next Troop meeting is Monday September 28th, 7:30-8:30pm.
Reminder to Scouts to wear Class A. A PLC meeting w=

follow from 8:30-9pm.
Monday October 5th is the Fall COH. We are having a family
Potluck dinner prior to the COH, from 6:45-7:30pm. We hope
all Scouts and families will join in this fun social event.&nbs=
p;

Santa Catalina 2010
Summer Camp - Interested?
Are you
Scouts interested in trying a new summer camp next summer? =
; We
are exploring interest and need to know if the Troop should pur=
sue
going to Camp Emerald Bay, on Santa Catalina Island, just 20 mi=
les
off the southern CA coast.
Younger Scouts are offered an exciting array of merit badges, w=
ith
a big focus on the environment, acquatics, nature, fish and
wildlife management and oceanography, as well as many land lover
activities. There is also a 1/2 day "Discover
Scuba" program for non-divers ages 12+ and dive tours for
certified divers 14+. Summer camp costs range from
$539-575/Scout, depending on the session attending. Airfa=
re
is not included.
Through the camp's High Adventure program, Scouts 14+ can immer=
se
themselves in activities offered in 4 different programs -
explorers (on land), canoers, Scuba Divers and Oceanographers.<=
br>
HA camp costs range from $499-774, depending on session attendi=
ng
and HA program chosen.
PLEASE...go to the BSA WestLA website=

on Camp Emerald Bay and do some research. Encourage your
Scout to talk to other Scouts, including Troop 303 Scouts, who =
have
attended for many years. Then, let Lynn Ho=

starting October 1.

Fair. This wonderful fund raiser is a special event for our
community. Scouts, please sign up to help - many helping hands =

light work...parents included! Remember, community service is an
important element in Scouting, and required for advancement. Em=

Orienteering Outing =
at
Briones - 10/11
On Sunday October 11, the Bay Area
Orienteering Club will host its 17th annual Scout-O', an offici=
al
orienteering competition at Briones Regional Park. This
competition is a map and compass race, where teams progress aro=
und
the park to a series of controls identified on the course
map. There are 4 different courses, depending on skill and
experience levels. Last year, Troop 237 placed 1st overal=
l -
join in the fun and competition of the day!
Scouts will meet at the church upper parking lot at 8am, we will
carpool to Briones, and will return to the same location by
4:30pm. Bring lunch and lots of water. Flyer and si=

Troop 237 Recruitment
Overnight 10/17-18
A very
important part of our Troop's success is recruiting new members=
and
it is up to all Scouts and Troop parents to spread the word abo=
ut
joining our Troop. We will be hosting a recruiting outing=
for
potential recruits on Saturday October 17 to Sunday October 18,=
at
Redwood Regional Park, about a 20 minute drive from
Orinda. There are many 5th grade Webelos who are interest=
ed
in joining Boy Scouts, and we want them to join our Troop - Sco=
uts,
put it on your calendar! Webelos who attend will need to =
be
accompanied by an adult, so the more Troop parents who can atte=
nd,
the better - questions can be asked and answered. Scouts who at=
tend
will receive 1 camping night toward the Camping merit badge.&nb=
sp;
Cost is $15-20 per Scout, which covers campsite fees,
transportation, dinner and breakfast. The Troop is coveri=
ng
expenses for nonmembers. Look for the flyer in the mail a=

Dixon Corn Maze Outi=

Scouts 1=

here's a fun one! On Sunday October 25th, we will be goin=
g to
a 43-acre corn maze in Dixon, where we will be able to run thro=
ugh the
corn maze at night, using flashlights and gut instincts to navi=
gate
the course. What a great way to celebrate Halloween=
, a
bit early. Don't miss it! 4:30pm departure from Ori=
nda
Community Church, dinner at In N Out Burger, and returning back=
to
the church by 10pm. For further information

Cal Football Scout D=
ay -
11/7
Troop 237 Scouts, friends and family are invited to attend Cal
Football Scout Day on Saturday November 17, before the Bears ta=
ke
on the Oregon State Beavers. Cal will be hosting a pre-ga=
me
event for all Scouts, where they will be able to meet players on
this year's Football team. The first 500 attendees will a=
lso
receive a cool Cal Scout Day neckerchief. There will
also be in-game contests and prizes. Game time has not yet
been announced, so check the Cal website fo=
r further
information. Cost is $30 for groups of 25 or more. =

any parent is planning on attending and can help organize the

Order of the Arrow
Update
Being an=
OA
member is an honor! The purpose of OA is to recognize Sco=
ut
campers, and to develop amd maintain camping traditions and spi=
rit.
Each Spring, Troop members elect fellow Scouts for membership i=
n OA.
To be eligible, Scouts must have completed 15 camping nights wi=
thin
2 years of joining Boy Scouts, have attended a BSA summer camp =
and
hold First Class rank. Our Troop provides many opportunities to
achieve the required number of camping nights, and Scouts are
highly encouraged to work toward OA eligibility. =

Troop 237 welcomed 5 new OA members this summer. Matt Dun=
can
and Drew Holland both completed their ordeal weekend at Camp
Wolfeboro in June, and Jaikar Beasley, Grant Miller, and Scott
Miller did the same at Camp Lindblad in August. All five
Scouts are now Ordeal Members of Ut-In Selica Lodge.
Additionally, our troop OA representative, Sam Slezak, became a
Brotherhood Member of Ut-In Selica Lodge in June at Camp
Wolfeboro. Congratulations to these fine Scouts, who are =
some
of our Troop's representatives that belong to Scouting's Nation=
al
Honor Society, Order of the Arrow.
For those Scouts elected to OA, MDSC is hosting an OA Ordeal at
Camp Wolfeboro, October 2-4. Cost is $15 for Arrowmen and=
$50
for candidates.
