February 8th, 1910 was when BSA was formed, in Washington,
D.C. We will be celebrating 100 years of Scouting!
Snow Camping Outing: Sat February 27-Sunday Februa=
ry 28.
Scouts should seriously consider participating in this uni=
que
outing not many other Troops offer. It will be lead by
experienced Adult Advisor, Erin Grey and will involve backpack=
ing,
snowshoeing and camping for one night at Castle Peak, atop Don=
ner
Pass in the Sierra's. It is an outing you won't want to
miss. Flyers and a sign up sheet will be available at th=
e 2/8
meeting - deadline to sign up is 2/8. Contact: =

Mandatory pack checks are scheduled for 2/17 and 2/22. C=

I, II and III (or Parts A/B/C on the new form) medical forms a=

Notes from Our
Advancement Chair, Rob Weikert<=

Due to popular demand, it looks like we will hold another B=
oard
of Review on February 8, 2010 starting at 7:30 PM at the
Church. Please contact Mr. Weikert asap (254-3195) if you
have completed your Scoutmaster Conference (and of course comp=
leted
all of the other requirements for the subject rank) to arrange=
for
the BofR.
With respect to merit badges, Scouts, please make sure that yo=
ur
blue cards are FULLY completed (including your address, all
required signatures, etc.) BEFORE you give them to Scoutmaster
Jorgensen for his final signature and transmittal to me.
Incomplete blue cards will be returned for "further proce=
ssing."
Finally, because our next Court of Honor will be held on Mo=
nday,
February 22, 2010, the deadline for submitting all paperwo=
rk to
me (i.e., completed blue cards), as well as any information to=
be
included in the program, is Monday, February 15. Anything
received after that date will be awarded at the Spring Court of
Honor.
Please note that there will be an Eagle Court of Honor on
Saturday, March 6, 2010, honoring Troop 237's two newest E=
agle
Scouts, Matt Duncan and David Esquivel. Please
congratulate these two fine Scouts on reaching Scouting's summ=
it
and joining our Troop's long line of Eagle Scouts.<=

Merit Badges Starti=
ng
Soon
Scouts: Below are listed a number of merit badges the
Troop has either scheduled or is planning to begin.
Plan ahead (BE PREPARED) and please don't try to tackle too ma=
ny
merit badges at one time. Most of these merit badges wil=
l be
offered again, beginning in the Fall 2010. If you decide=
to
start a merit badge, it is your COMMITMENT that is of upmost
importance. Make sure the schedule works for you - we are all =
busy,
including the adult volunteers who so generously run these mb'=
s for
the Troop, for you!
Personal Management: Sign ups for PM (Eagle requ=
ired
mb) were available at the 2/1 Troop meeting. Mr. Wes Yee=
is
the mb counselor and will hold the first meeting Monday 2/8,
7-7:30pm. If you are a Life Scout who needs to start=
this
mb, please contact Carolyn Pal=
mer
asap. This mb is for older Scouts and takes a considerab=
le
amount of time to complete (namely, you must keep a budget for=
13
consecutive weeks). The second meeting is Monday March 1,
6:30-7:30pm. Please check your calendars before
committing. Scouts should request a blue card from Mr. J=
orgensen,
purchase the PM mb booklet (or borrow one from the Troop's
library),print out the mb worksheet from the Troop's website a=
nd
bring all 3 things to the first meeting.
Personal Fitness: Signups have been availa=
ble
at the past few meetings and is currently full (pays to come t=
o the
Troop meetings). Dr. Julie Kirchberg will hold the first
meeting on 2/22. Details will be emailed to those who ha=
ve
signed up. If you are a Life Scout who still needs this =
mb,
please email Carolyn Palmer asap.
Citizenship in the Nation: Sign ups for th=
is mb
(Eagle required) will be available beginning at the 2/8 Troop
meeting. Mr. Steve Berg is the mb counselor and the first
meeting is scheduled for Monday March 29, 6:45-7:30pm.&=
nbsp;
Scouts will be asked to complete various requirements on their=
own,
before the followup meeting on Monday May 3. This is an
excellent mb for First Class Scouts and above to start.
Communications: Carolyn Palmer will be the=
mb
counselor for this Eagle required mb. So as not to confl=
ict
with other mb's starting, April 19 looks to be the start
date. This mb will be offered to Life Scouts. Sign=
ups
will be available beginning in March.
Citizenship in the World, First Aid and Camping =
are
Eagle required mb's the Troop is working on scheduling and will
most likely begin in late Spring. C/World and Firs=
t Aid
are good mb for Scouts First Class and above to start. B=
efore
a Scout can start the Camping mb, he must have completed 20 ni=
ghts
of outdoor camping (6 nights of 1 summer camp attendance is co=
unted
toward the 20 night total).
Please note that many of these merit badges are offered during=
Scout
summer camp, at either Camp John Mensinger (July 11-17) or
Wolfeboro (July 18-24). Most do have prerequisites t=
hat
must be completed before attending camp.

Neckerchiefs
Scouts - have you lost or misplaced your Troop 237 neckerchief=
?
When you joined the Troop, you were given the blue neckerchief=
as a
welcome gift. They are special ordered through BSA and the Tro=
op
absorbs the cost of your first one.
If you need to replace your neckerchief, Carolyn Palmer will h=
ave
them available for purchase 15 minutes before the Winter=
COH
on 2/22. Please bring $20 cash, or check (payable to BSA
Troop 237) with you. Yes, they are expensive - keep it i=
n a safe
place!

Welcoming New Scout=

Parents to Troop 237
All signs are this will be a very strong recruiting year for T=
roop
237. Scouts and parents, our efforts during the Redwood
Recruiting outing last October and our invitation to visit a T=
roop
meeting last November are paying off - at this point, we antic=
ipate
approximately 20 boys will be joining Troop 237 this coming Ma=
rch.
Calendar highlights for new Scouts joining Troop 237 are:

their first Troop meeting. New Scout parents will attend=

Parent Orientation in the Fireside Lounge.

In addition, for their first few months after joining the Troo=
p,
new Scouts will be meeting with Troop Guides 20 minutes before=

Troop meeting, to assist them in rank advancement.

interested in being a Troop Guide for this great group of inco=
ming
Scouts, please contact Mr.
Jorgensen soon. There will be a meeting for all T=
roop
Guides on 2/8, to outline your role, training guidelines a=
nd
expectations.

100th Anniversary
Jamboree 4/16-18, 2010
In celebration of the 100th anniversary of Boy Scouts, S=
couts
and parents are encouraged to participate with the Troop in th=
e 100th
Anniversary Jamboree,which will be held April 16-18 at the Ala=
meda
County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton.
There will be NO MDSC sponsored Camporee this year - in=
stead
all 11 Northern California Councils are sponsoring the April
Jamboree and the program is geared more toward exhibitions and
demonstrations, rather than competition. Activities will
include BMX Racing, Field Sports, Interactive displays,
reenactments and living Scout History, and a big Saturday night
show in the Arena.
Troop 237 will reserve a campground site for Friday night 4/16=
and
Saturday night 4/17. Scouts will have the option of atte=
nding
1 or both nights, and then enjoying all the activities schedul=
ed
throughout Saturday and Sunday. This promises to be a ve=
ry
exciting weekend at the Fairgrounds! The days' events ar=
e a
great time for family and friends to attend as well (accompani=
ed by
an adult).
